I have never been grateful for muddy fields and painful teeth but I will now. LOL
You seem to have a such a unique background and it is interesting so far what you have shared about it.
I know what you mean about "nanny states" or what others call "welfare states."
I see the result of that in Europe now--with the few stronger economies supporting the weak ones and you live in Canada now which seems from my perspective--an American--growing more and more "nanny."
And America also is heading ever deeper in that direction.
